Open Mic at OTA
Come down to OTA (Olympic Theater Arts) this coming Monday, September 19th, from 6—9pm to enjoy Open Mic—I’ll be doing a short author reading. Admission is free, there’s a wine bar and refreshments for sale—the address is 414 N Sequim Ave, here in Sequim, WA if you are unfamiliar with the location.
Last month I attended—and performed a reading from my first book, The Curse of the Neverland—I had a great time as an audience member as well as performing. Here are a few of the acts that impressed me:
- A multi-character skit (performed by one woman), recreating the bizarre birthday celebration she’d just had with her brother in Minnesota
- An engrossing short story with a twist: a redneck rancher finds a UFO in his barn. In his shock and excitement he knocks over a kerosene lamp and starts a fire. In the end he can’t share what he saw because everyone thinks he got drunk and burned down his own barn. Dang those UFO’s, anyway!
- Poetry about a junk drawer, written and read just so.
- Many wonderful and varied musicians, including a Barbershop Quartet, a woman who sang just like Loretta Lynn, a very talented electric bass player (who happens to be blind) and his beautiful chanteuse wife, and my favorite: a woman ukulele player who played and sang a memorable blues song with which we all joined in on the chorus: “I’ve got too much butt, for one pair of jeans!”
Believe me, I’m no pushover when it comes to entertainment. It’s well hosted, well facilitated and organized, there’s a great sound system, seating is comfortable—it’s a chance to hang out and enjoy the wealth of creativity in this community. It’s worth your while, very entertaining, and free to boot!
